Mirror Mirror, and How It Came to Be
Believe it or not, Mirror Mirror chose its own name. While a statement like that might turn some heads, I want to share the unfiltered origin of the name of my practice, Mirror Mirror. Truly, the name was the most challenging phase of bringing my spiritual practice to life. I sat for hours and brainstormed for weeks, searching for a name that could encompass all that I wanted my space to be. To find a name that embodied the energy of who I am, while also honoring all the moments in life that brought me here. I have journal pages filled with lists of spiritually rooted words… Labyrinth, Spiral, Witch, Woman, Sacred, Goddess, Light, Love, etc… nothing stuck. None of the phrases that I came up with had the traction that I was looking for. All the word-play felt like I was hardly scratching the surface of the fullness of its essence. I wanted a name that was an extension of myself, and rolled off the tongue as if it were meant to be.
I know that my practice is an extension of my essence, but it needed a name that carried an energy of its own. I was missing the ring of resonance. I felt in a frenzy of sea sickness from words that weren’t right. I remember sitting in my room, incredibly frustrated by the process that required so much work, yet yielded no meaningful results. Something in my heart told me to turn inward… To sit in silence and listen to what my higher self would tell me. I had to create a sacred space to exist without the pressure to produce. In this silence, I was gazing in the mirror. I was lost in a trace looking at my reflection. That is when it hit me. “ Mirror Mirror” came to my mind. Maybe it was inspired by the catchy Disney phrase it derived from, honoring my inner child, but it felt deeper than that. I wanted my practice to be a reflection of me and my essence, while also being something that others can see themselves in.
Mirror work is a powerful divination tool and has really helped me to step into my power. It is the practice of looking in the mirror and speaking to yourself all that you wish to be. A reminder of who you are, and the innate wholeness of your being. They say the eyes are the window to the soul, and let mirror work be the living proof of that. You will get lost in trace, as you connect with yourself deeply. I try to practice this work often, building a deep sense of trust and connection with myself and the very active, responsive, and involved Divine energy that surrounds us all. There is an invisible force that responds during mirror work when you take the time, and set the sacred space of being fully present with yourself. The power behind speaking these truths out into the world is astounding. “ I am brave, I am divine, I am powerful, I trust my intuition, I know desire and pleasure is mine to experience. I am an extension of the Divine, I am in active co-creation with the Higher Power, and I shamelessly express the fullness of my divinity. I am safe to be seen in my authenticity, I am a magnet to all that is meant for me. I am always on time, I am never delayed, and I am exactly who I am meant to be, as I am.” Speaking out into the universe the trueness of your being, you will receive a response that is very much real and followed by an undeniable shift. Your internal process changes, and you feel more connected with yourself than ever before. You feel stronger, wiser, more confident, more beautiful, more connected, and whatever it is that you wish to feel and embody. You will find yourself enchanted by your own eyes, and the spell of words that echo from mind to body. Taking the time to be fully present with yourself is fucking magical.
I feel that it is safe to assume that we all look in the mirror at least once a day. We check ourselves out, whether that be to make sure we are presentable to the world, or because we desire to see ourselves as we are. We gaze at the vessel that holds our souls, and often forget that it is an extension of the Divine. We were hand crafted and created with such intention and care. The same creator that made the stars, trees, seas, flowers, and infinite galaxy, created you too. We don’t criticize cosmic and natural design. Instead, we see the natural world as a reflection of uniqueness and Divine beauty. Why do we not extend that same grace to ourselves? You were made by the same artist, and how spectacular that is to remember. You were crafted with the intention to be exactly as you are from the freckles on your skin, to the crinkles that cradle your eyes, to the folds in your belly. We look at ourselves everyday, and so many of us miss the opportunity to see the magical evolution that takes place. We miss the beauty that lies in the passing of time, as we change with it. We get lost in the messy hair, acne spots, the wrinkles on our face, or the silver hair that shines through… as if any of those can dull the shine of how truly wonderfully magnificent we are, just as we are. The mirror can be a place where we torture ourselves with the illusion of imperfection. It can also serve as a window into our souls and the beautiful incarnation of our creator made manifest. We have the choice to see ourselves as a magical, beautiful, and a glorious vessel that holds the fullness of our spirit, and the Divine within.
What a powerful tool the mirror can be, and we use it everyday, often unconsciously. It is a window that allows us to see ourselves as an extension of the Divine Creator. It offers us an opportunity to connect with ourselves deeply, in loving embrace as we see ourselves in the passing of time, and the many evolutions of self that follow along with it. To see yourself in the presence of NOW, and to remember where you have been, and to see all the possibilities of who you can be. To gaze upon yourself, and be in awe of the creation that you are. As we look in the mirror, we are truly present with ourselves, and honoring the sacred connection of the fullness of our divinity. That is the essence I wanted to capture as I named my business, and I believe it translates in the name that seemingly chose itself in a moment of divine connection.
